Memories Through Landscape and Dwelling

Trinity College Dublin MPhil Students, Annie Collins and Johnny O’Grady, will explore themes of memory in relation to the lives and works of artists Jane and Tony O’Malley. These lectures will borrow from research for their postgraduate dissertations which they completed earlier this month. Alongside their studies in Dublin, Annie and Johnny began travelling to Callan regularly to complete research in the Physicianstown house, archive and studio. While they completed two separate dissertations, memory was a thematic overlap which will tie across into each of their lectures.

Annie will be discussing the Physicianstown house and garden, focusing on the decorative works completed by Jane. She explores how these artworks are pockets
of memory by examining the O’Malleys’ dynamic visual language of motifs, materials and domestic/professional partnership. The artworks were at the centre of daily life for Jane and Tony, and not only influenced their artistic production while in Physicianstown, but also redefined traditional understandings of dwelling.
