'Tony and Jane O'Malley; The exotic in plain sight.'
This talk will review Tony's search for identity in landscape and history, which was met and embellished by his travels with Jane to places as far afield as the Bahamas. The exotic landscapes they found together fitted easily into their equally exotic embrace of the Irish landscape of Clare Island, rural Kilkenny and St. Ives in Cornwall during its most colourful period of artistic activity, only to physically recreate it in Physicianstown, outside Callan, with Jane's Dovecote and Laburnum Walk.
Catherine came to know Tony and Jane through her work at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, curating exhibitions of Tony's work from the generous donation of George and Maura McClelland and accompanying Jane on curatorial research trips to their old studio in Seal Cottage in Saint Ives. In this talk, she will explore the importance of these different environments for them and outline the history of Tony's overnight success in Irish art in the early 1980s when he was nearly 70 years old.
The Six after 6 - Summer Cultural Series is supported by Kilkenny County Council, Fáilte Ireland – Ireland’s Ancient East and the Kilkenny Night Time Economy Pilot.
