The O'Malley Collection Exhibition

Butler Gallery is honoured to have been entrusted to caretake the artworks of Irish artist Tony O'Malley (1913-2003), donated to us by his late wife Jane O'Malley (1944-2023) upon our move to Evans' Home in 2020. In addition to her own life as an artist, Jane tirelessly worked on preserving the artistic legacy of her late husband. Butler Gallery also honours her work and dedicates this wing to the work of both artists.

We present a changing selection of works highlighting different aspects of both Tony and Jane’s output over the years. These selections can include early works on paper based on the life and landscape of Tony's beloved Callan along with a range of self-portraits, paintings and sculptural constructions that reflect his progression into abstraction that demonstrates the range and richness of the artist's career. Much of Jane’s work documents their shared life and the wonderful garden she created around their home in Physicianstown, while also representing their time in St Ives, Cornwall, Clare Island in County Mayo and many exotic trips to the Bahamas, the Tropics and Lanzarote.

Tony and Jane O’Malley captured the essence of life around them wherever they landed. These works on view are full of curiosity and joy and provide an intimate glimpse into lives richly lived by an extraordinary couple.
