In this 4-day painting course, running over 4 consecutive Fridays in January, Jade will guide you through the process of creating your own oil painting using traditional layering techniques. You will begin by developing a monochromatic underpainting to establish light, shadow, and form, followed by the gradual application of semi-transparent colour layers to create depth, richness, and luminosity.

Through a step-by-step approach with live demonstrations, you will learn essential skills such as creating an imprimatura, understanding tonal value, paint application, and colour mixing, all while working from photographic references. Each participant will focus on one painting throughout the course, receiving personalised guidance and feedback.

Whether you are a beginner exploring oil painting for the first time or an intermediate artist looking to refine your technique, this course is designed to support your progress and creativity, with no prior experience required. All materials provided.

Refunds are offered up to 72 hours in advance of the event. Please email [email protected] to cancel. A full refund will be issued if the workshop is cancelled by Butler Gallery.

About the Artist:

Graduating from West Wales School of the Arts, Jade Butler is an Irish artist whose practice employs portraiture and still life to examine personal identity within modern society. Her contemporary style is deeply rooted in traditional skills.
