Adult Art Class
Join us for a one-day workshop at Butler Gallery, where you will gain hands-on experience in plaster mould-making and casting methods.
The day will start with a presentation exploring the rich history of plaster in decoration and sculpture. We’ll begin with its ancient uses, trace its fall and rise in favour, and end with its resurgence in the 20th century among artists like Alberto Giacometti, Barbara Hepworth, Bruce Nauman, and Rachel Whiteread, to name but a few. The rest of the day will be dedicated to a guided practical exercise where you’ll make your own two-part plaster mould and learn about different casting materials, such as wax and slip.
This workshop is suited for beginners and will equip you with the knowledge and skills to continue experimenting independently.
All materials are provided. We simply ask that you bring up to three small, symmetrical items on the day, and wear old clothes.
About the Artist
Domnick Sorace is an Italian/Maltese multimedia artist based in Dublin since 2018, after graduating with a B.A. (Honours) Degree in Fine Arts from the MCAST Institute of Creative Arts, Malta.
His practice is primarily sculptural and installation-based, exploring the imprints left by beliefs, the experience of inhabiting a body, memory, and the tensions shaped by gender and sexuality. His approach to material is intuitive, guided by symbolic and sensory qualities, often leading him to work with unconventional media. With a background in ceramics, mould making remains central to his practice, resulting in artworks made from wax, plaster, and bronze.
Sorace has over seven years of experience in leading and delivering technical workshops.
Recent achievements include When Stars Collide (solo) at Rua Red South Dublin Arts Centre (2025); Between Flesh and Reflection (group) at Umberto Benappi, Sansicario Alto (2025); recipient of the SDCC Artist Bursary Award and The Solstice Diversity Award (2025); and a writing residency at Arte Studio Ginestrelle, Assisi (2025), funded by Culture Moves Europe.
