To celebrate Biodiversity Week this year at Butler Gallery artist Mary Dillon will host a Drawing and Painting workshop on botanical art on Sunday 26th May. Drawing and painting from nature is the perfect starting point to exploring the richness of our natural world. National Biodiversity Week is a call to action to value and protect nature. We can all make a difference.

Our Hedgerows, woodlands, fields and gardens are brimming over with new plant life.
This one day course will provide opportunities to explore investigative drawing and painting. A multi-sensory approach will create a dynamic course, in which the participant will experiment with observation, mark-making and colour exploration.
Workshop will cover:
- Observational and measured drawing
- Exploring light and tone to create form
- Colour mixing and matching
- Wet and dry watercolour techniques
Materials will be provided.
About the artist:
Mary Dillon has recently returned to live in Kilkenny. She exhibits and teaches throughout Ireland and internationally. Her work, Abundance - Punica granatum, was awarded Best in Show at the American Society of Botanical Artists Annual International Exhibition held in New York, in 2022. Her Black Parrot Tulip was chosen by the National Gallery of Ireland as the signature image for their exhibition, Drawn From Nature in 2020 and the subsequent publication ’Drawn From Nature, the Flowering of Irish Botanical Art’ by Patricia Butler.
